Farm to Fork

With thanks to the RHET (Royal Horicultural Education Trust) P3 had a busy day yesterday visiting Templehall Farm in Pencaitland where Farmer Barclay taught us all about the animals and crops on his farm. We were learning about the care, hard work and technologies that go into growing our food in Scotland.

Weighing and measuring is very important in farming. In one of the photos you will see us standing on the weighbridge. The weight of the entire group was 1140kg!

Following the farm we were off on a tour of Tesco at Hardengreen, Dalkeith with Claire who showed us what goes on behind the scenes (including a visit inside a huge freezer) to get our food from the farm and onto the supermarket shelves.

 

 

Farm to Fork

As part of our Food and Farming topic, Primary 3 have been out exploring the supermarket store Tesco at Dalkeith. First we met Claire our guide and in the staffroom we put on our tabbards so we could be seen in the store. In the fruit and vegetable section we did the Rainbow Challenge, finding fruits and vegetables from all the colours of the rainbow. We slooked at packaging to find which countries the foods came from. We found ginger from China, chillies from Kenya, green beans from Tanzania and tomotoes from Poland. We learned about how bread and cheese were made and we were amazed that it took 10 litres of milk to make one block of cheese! After that we went into the storeroom to see where the trucks deliver the cages of food and we even went inside the deep freeze where it was -22 degrees! Back at the staffroom we all tried different breads, cheese and fruits and chose out favourites. It was a very interesting trip!
